What makes you happy right now?

Happy people live happier lives. No surprise there!

Why does happiness matter? Because living in alignment with your values is the way to authentic happiness. It’s much different and more fulfilling than chasing moments of fleeting fun.

Sharing your values with the world creates a more meaningful life, filled with greater joy and connection.

Authentic happiness means living with the ups and downs of life, and being aware of how you can choose your reactions to what's happening in your life.

Sadness and heartbreak live in the same part of the brain as joy and happiness. It's all part of the human experience. We can’t have the highs without the lows. Emotional intelligence helps you live with greater awareness. You can learn to consciously choose to focus on creating more happiness and resilience.

When you’ve got to make a choice, why not choose happy?

What are some of the choices that you can think about which will spark happiness in you? If you're living life on auto-pilot, you're missing out on enjoying the things that truly matter to your heart. Look around you for new options if you feel like you're missing out on joy. When you find your calling in life, you’ll find your bliss.

I spent too long time feeling badly that I wasn’t interested in the careers that were expected of me. Value-based work is important to me. Helping other people to improve their lives, to find peace and calm, to feel connected, and to create their best lives brings me joy. That's what makes my work a win-win situation.

We’re all different, and thrive when we choose careers and lifestyles that reflect our values.

I’ve learned to listen to my inner calling. At a recent yoga and self-awareness retreat, I got a message during an activity that said "I am a teacher." My first thought was “not anymore.” I taught preschool for years before becoming a life coach, so it didn’t make sense on the surface.

As I wondered about it over the next few days, I began to see the message.

I am a teacher. That’s where I thrive. I teach people to discover and live their passion and purpose. Working with people on a deeper level of kindness, connection and love, I help them to discover their own values. Helping people to step into their lives with confidence and joy brings me greater joy, too.

Feeling connected to humanity, living with calm and grace, laughing, dreaming and sharing kindness helps me to live a life with more happiness. Whether I’m chatting with a complete stranger while waiting on line, enjoying dinner with my family, or playing with a neighbor’s dog, it’s that spark of connection that brings me happiness.

True happiness isn’t the hedonistic pursuit of fun and fleeting adventures. It's much deeper. When we connect to our values and strengths, we live with greater ease and flow.

Positive emotions have a positive effect on health, performance and overall satisfaction. When your life and values get into sync, you'll stop feeling like you’re trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Discover your own soul-nurturing strengths and put them into action.  You’ll create more happiness and joy.

Positive psychology is “the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play " according to the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

The VIA Survey is a powerful tool to learn about your signature (innate) strengths, and how to create more happiness and fulfillment in your life. It looks at 24 strengths, and is absolutely spot-on.

I took the VIA (Values In Action) survey, and was impressed with how accurately it showed my top strengths. As a life coach helping people through life transitions, my character strengths are right in line with what I do: kindness, love, social intelligence, love of learning and honesty.

When I’m facing a decision, I look at my top values and see which choices feel most aligned to me.

And when I’m feeling stuck, it's time for me to reconnect to the values that bring out the best in me.

Vision boards are a powerful and fun way to manifest your best life. Here's my latest one, created while on a peaceful retreat in Siesta Key.

Before I took the VIA survey, I sometimes found myself thinking I “should” (yes, even coaches sometimes “should” on themselves) do when I wasn’t feeling energy or enthusiasm. Looking back, I realize that when my choices and values weren’t aligned, they didn’t feel right. I’ve learned to use my top values to tap into my other values with more confidence.

When life is challenging, we can consciously use our character strengths to choose how we react to situations. Living in alignment with your values allows you to live your best self and create more joy and happiness.

Approaching life with a glass half full instead of half empty attitude is one way to choose happiness. Instead of being at the effect of your life, you can make the choices that allow you to be at the cause of your life.

Positive psychology teaches us how to embrace positive emotions about the past, present and future to live with greater happiness.

Learn your signature strengths. Use them to bring more happiness into your life and into the world around you. Happiness is contagious.

I just returned from a yoga and wellness retreat with a dozen women I met for the first time. We spent lots of time in self-exploration, learning about ourselves and each other. Many of us felt called to find greater fulfillment through helping others by using our strengths in a meaningful way. How exciting to hear that within days of returning home, people were volunteering in new and wonderful ways to bring happiness to others, and to themselves.
